For Friday, November 21
SCRIPTURE READING: Romans 12:9-13
KEY VERSE: Practice hospitality (Rom. 12:13b).
Go Away
There are hotels; stay there. There are motels, lodges, inns, resorts; stay there. Stay anywhere but here. In short, go away.

Why is hospitality so difficult? It seems like a perfectly good virtue, until we have to practice it in reality. Hospitality is more than a friendly wave and a smile given to someone as we meet them. Hospitality is more than a warm embrace and an attempt to make a newcomer feel welcomed. Hospitality is more than allowing a person to come and stay at our house for a day or a week. It is more than fixing a meal that is more to your guest's taste than to your taste.

Hospitality as defined by Scripture is where we move from the externals in welcoming a person to the internals where we embrace a brother or sister in Christ into our family. We invite them into our home rather than into the house. We dine not with them in the formal dining room. Rather, we have a family meal in the kitchen.

Hospitality is one in which the guest is transformed by love into an adopted family member. A family member sharing in all things, especially the joy of life together in Christ.
